I wanna make a musical, or at least the script of one, for a story about LGBTQ+ people, by LGBTQ+ people, for LGBTQ+.
Yeah I know, I sound corny. Whatever.
But, because I’ve been thinking about the recent political events surrounding the trans community mostly (and also because I just wanna write a trans character because I want that rep yo), I’ve come up with the idea for an LGBTQ+ musical about the story of a transman!
The main character will, in the beginning of Act 1, discover that they are a transgender man BUT also discover that they have a crush on another man. Having just discovered his gender identity and not wanting to jeopardize his chances with this guy, he pretends to be a “normal” cis, hetero, woman. He ends up going through the struggles of identity, of being closeted, coming out, judgement from peers, and all that good stuff.
SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING:
But my aim is for him to come out to his crush at the end of Act 1 with a song called “Across The Bridge” which is gonna be a song about how he’s finally coming out and crossing that bridge to become the man he truly is. But, Act 2 comes in and he starts coming out to people and towards the end of the musical, he commits suicide from jumping off a bridge in “Across The Bridge (Reprise)”.
Now, you’re probably like “BUT WHY CANT IT BE A HAPPY ENDING FOR HIM?! WHY ARE YOU GONNA KILL HIM OFF?!”
-Well, my dear friend, it’s all in awareness. Around 50% of transgender people attempt suicide and a lot of them actually succeed. So, the main character will most likely die at the end and every other secondary main character will have a revelation after the news of it comes out.
“Now, who are these secondary main characters???”
- Well I’m glad you ask, bud! Secondary characters will consist of LGBTQ+ character who will have small plot lines that you can follow beside the main plot line. I want AT LEAST BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
1. An Ace Character (be it they’re asexual, aromantic, and/or agender)
2. An intersex character
3. A nonbinary person (whom will not identify as agender if the Ace Character identifies as agender)
4. A Cis-gender Non-Ally
“Why a non-ally?”
- There needs to be at least one non-ally that we can focus on and have their perspective on the main plot (and maybe the minor plots). BUT ITS NOT ALL BAD! I want this non-ally to have a revelation in which they realize that harassing the main character to the point of committing suicide is wrong and they come together with the other secondary main characters and learns to accept them. (CORNY AGAIN, I KNOW!)
“Why should I care?”
- If you are in the LGBTQ+ community, are an ally of the community, are interested in having a small window into the huge community it is, don’t know what the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and more) community is, or you just don’t like the LGBTQ+ community, you should take at least a bit of interest in this. This is aiming to have everyone’s view on LGBTQ+ issues and ideas in mind.
Which is a great Segway to my next point: YOU CAN HELP IN THE MAKING OF THIS SCRIPT, MAYBE EVEN DEVELOP IT INTO AN ANIMATED MUSICAL!!
“Isn’t that kind of like Heathe–” yes love I know but listen, I’m not a director or anybody important. Just work with me friend.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE INPUT ON YOUR EXPERIENCES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, EXPERIENCE FROM BEING PART OF AN IDENTITY RECOGNIZED BY THE COMMUNITY, AND/OR YOU WANT TO HELP ACTUALLY WRITE THE SCRIPT, MESSAGE ME! ANY WAY YOU CAN!!! WE’RE TAKING ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET! WE WANT THIS FOR YOU! FOR THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY AND THOSE OUTSIDE OF IT! WE WANT TO MAKE A STORY ABOUT SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO ALL OF US, BE IT YOU LOVE OR HATE THE COMMUNITY!!! BE A PART OF THE MAKING OF THIS PROJECT!!!
Okay, love y'all 💙 Bye!
